Natural Pest Control Guinea fowl are a domesticated game bird related to turkeys and pheasants. They are endemic to Africa and do well in hot climates. Their domestication potentially goes back to the 5th century B.C.
Males and females are also called roosters and hens, however they are visually almost identical. The best way to differentiate the sexes is by their call: females say "Buck-Wheat" (two syllables) and males say "Cah" (one syllable). Guinea Fowl are known for being great watch dogs, they are loud and inquisitive and alarm when they see something out of sorts. They are also great at eating ticks, bugs, and keeping away snakes. They help us by keeping rattlesnakes away from our home and livestock. Hens lay a small, hard-shelled that has a higher yolk to white ratio than chicken eggs. They can also be used as meat birds, and are considered a delicacy. |
